Q: What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
A: Colon Hydrotherapy (a.k.a. Colonics) is a therapeutic procedure that uses filtered water to gently cleanse the large intestine or colon. It helps remove accumulated waste, mucus, bacteria, gas and other toxic matter by hydrating, softening, loosening and rinsing the walls of the colon. It also helps improve colon muscle tone, perstaltic action (muscle contraction of the colon) and absorption of nutrients.
Colonics ARE NOT a cure for any disese, but can aid in the body's natural ability to heal itself by temporarily removing the overload on the system caused by toxins.
Q: Who should have Colon Hydrotherapy?
A: Individuals who consume large quantities of refined, processed food, meat and dairy products, and few vegetables, fruits or whole grains are excellent candidates for colon hydrotherapy. A nutrient-poor, low fiber diet can lead to sluggish bowels, constipation and accumulated wastes. Almost everyone can benefit from some internal cleansing, as every day we are exposed to toxins in our air, food and water, no matter how careful we are.
Q: What can I expect on the first visit?
A: The first visit includes a brief history and assessment to rule out any conditions that are contraindicated for this therapy.
Q: What should I eat before / after the session?
A: Most people find it beneficial to refrain from eating at least 2 hours before the session. It is also helpful to avoid eating gas-producing foods the day before (e.g. beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, cucumbers, melon, bananas, raw apples, dairy products or anything else that gives you gas). After the treatment, eating broths made with garlic, onion, ginger, and/or miso will help soothe the mucous membrane tissue of the gut. Of course, sufficient amounts of water should be consumed to enhance the detoxification process and help eliminate toxins.
Q: Are there any conditions for which colon hydrotherapy is contraindicated?
A: Colonics should be avoided by people with active rectal bleeding, severe hemorrhoids and fissures/fistulas, colon cancer, recent colon surgery ,history of seizures or steroid medication use, uncontrolled hypertension, vascular aneurysm, severe anemia, abdominal hernia, pregnancy or renal insufficiency.
Q: What kind of equipment is used?
A: The FDA-approved Dotolo Toxygen machine is a closed system that is run under a maximum pressure of 2 psi. The water used is purified by three filtration systems. Both water temperature and pressure are carefully monitored. Only disposable specula and tubing are used.
Q: Do treatments hurt, or are they uncomfortable?
A: Most people find colon hydrotherapy to be relaxing and refreshing. Mild nausea or cramping might be experienced during the initial sessions due to the agitation and release of old debris and toxins. Abdominal massage, reduced water pressure, deep breathing and/or application of essential oils almost always relieve discomfort quickly.
Q: How many sessions are needed?
A: One's health status, dietary habits, lifestyle and goals will determine the number of sessions required. Generally, a series of at least 3 sessions within a period of 3 weeks is recommended for an initial detoxification period. In addition, dietary changes, nutritional or herbal supplements and lifestyle modifications are necessary to successfully meet your health goals
Q: What if I am on my menstrual cycle?
A: Having a colon hydrotherapy session during a mentrual cycle is ideal, as the body is already undergoing a cleanse.
Q: What happens during the procedure?
A: As you lie on the table, the equipment, which is a wall mounted machine with tubing and a few levers and valves will be at your feet.
As the recipient of the treatment, you will be lying comfortably on your left side and then your back as the colonic is administered.
A small amount of lubrication is applied to the speculum. When you are ready, the speculum is inserted gently into the rectum. Water flows in and out of the colon via 2 smaller tubes. One small tube lets the water flow in; the other draws the water out, carrying with it wastes, excess gas, mucus, undigested food particles, etc.
As the wastewater flows out of the colon, the practitioner gently massages the abdomen to help release its contents. It is possible to see the expelled waste matter when it passes through a special viewing window in the machine. the recipient of the colon hydrotherapy may talk, engage in deep breathing exercises and guided visualization or may remain quiet throughout the entire session.
A private restroom is attached to the treatment room for convenience before and after the session.
